Het succes van Tony Hawk’s Pro Skate 1 + 2 Remake, was niet genoeg. Ontwikkelaar Vicarious Visions heeft direct na de release van Tony Hawk’s Pro Skate 1 + 2 Remake, een pitch gehouden voor eventuele remakes van deel 3 en 4. Helaas had Activision ondanks interesse geen groen licht gegeven voor het project.
Dat zegt onderzoeker Liam Robertson in een nieuwe video waar hij dieper duikt op ontwikkelaars Vicarious Visions. Robertson heeft een anonieme bron binnen Vicarious Visions gesproken. Deze persoon heeft aangegeven dat de studio heel graag Tony Hawk’s Pro Skate 3 + 4 Remake wilde maken en Activision wilde dat in eerste instantie ook, maar de studio ineens werd geabsorbeerd door Blizzard Entertainment, omdat Diablo 2 Resurrected gemaakt moest worden en dit project had voorrang. Daarna werd snel duidelijk dat Diablo IV extra mankracht nodig had om de geplande releasedatum te halen. Vicarious Visions werd daarom niet alleen een Blizzard support studio, maar daadwerkelijk een deel van Blizzard’s Diablo-team.
Activision wilde wel op termijn een Tony Hawk’s Pro Skate 3 + 4 Remake, maar vertrouwde dat enkel toe aan Vicarious Visions. Aangezien de studio nu onderdeel is van Blizzard Entertainment als onder de naam Blizzard Albany, lijkt de kans klein dat deze studio toch nog Tony Hawk’s Pro Skate 3 + 4 Remake kan gaan maken. Activision Blizzard is ondertussen eigendom geworden van Microsoft inclusief de IP Tony Hawk. Het is nu Microsoft die een eventuele nieuwe Tony Hawk-project kan goedkeuren voor ontwikkeling.
“That was the plan, even up until the release date of [1 and 2],” Hawk said. “We were doing 3 and 4, and then Vicarious got kind of absorbed, and then they were looking for other developers, and then it was over. The truth of it is [Activision] were trying to find somebody to do 3 and 4 but they just didn’t really trust anyone the way they did Vicarious. So they took other pitches from other studios, like, ‘what would you do with the THPS title?’ And they didn’t like anything they heard, and then that was it. Who knows? Maybe when the dust settles, we’ll figure it out. You never know. I never would’ve thought we were going to do 1 and 2, 20 years later.”
“We settled on adding some handling features from the later games to reflect the way people remember the old Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater games. The improvements from 3 seemed to bleed into people’s memories of the first 2. Eventually it became clear that we didn’t have time for more than 1 + 2, so the idea that we’d continue on and release 3+4 in some fashion was on the table.”
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 is speelbaar op de PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S en de Nintendo Switch.
